Salix triandra ‘Black Maul’
‘Black Maul’ grows beautiful straight rods, making this variety very popular for basketry. Known as a classic in the UK, the name “maul" is believed to have originated from the word "malleable” which accurately describes its flexibility.
‘Black Maul’ is a vigorous grower and once established, it produces 6-8’ of fresh growth each season after coppicing. Its upright shape and shiny dark maroon-black stems make it a valuable addition to any landscaping project, providing year-round beauty. The almond-shaped leaves start off slightly furry and later become smooth and shiny, adding to its overall visual appeal.
This ornamental shrub attracts butterflies and bees. It is another multipurpose choice, as it’s ideal as hedging, basketry and living structures. Grown as a tree it can reach 30’.
