Salix triandra 'Noir de Touraine'

‘Noir de Touraine’ is a favorite willow variety with origins in the traditional provinces of Touraine, France and renowned for its excellent qualities in basketry. Once established, this willow is a vigorous grower, reaching heights of 6-9’ each season after coppicing. The young stems of 'Noir de Touraine' are a striking dark reddish-brown to dark chocolate color, adding depth and richness to any landscape. The leaves are finely toothed, with a dark green and shiny upper surface, and pale green on the underside, creating an attractive contrast.

Used in landscaping, ‘Noir de Touraine’ makes a stunning feature when planted in a grouping or combined with vibrant varieties such as ‘Britzensis’, ‘Natural Red’, ‘Jaune de falaise’, or any lighter shade varieties like: ‘Light Dicks, ‘Daphnoides’, ‘Harrison’ or ‘Dicky Meadows’. The dark rods of ‘Noir de Touraine’ are particularly eye-catching when outlined by a winter snowfall, adding dramatic beauty to any winter landscape.

Dried rod color: Mottled dark green to dark brown

  • Beautiful for small living structures

  • Good for creating lower hedges or fedges

  • When coppiced it provides lots of rods

  • Great in summer floral arrangements

On our farm, we created a 50’ long living fence with ‘Noir de Touraine’ that is situated in front of the brilliant ‘Britzensis’. The contrast is proving to be attention getting and a functional way to delineate the willow garden from the pasture.
